Prose Medal Winner chosen as first Book of the Month of 2018

19 Dec 2017

A new novel by the winner of this year's Prose Medal has been named the Welsh Books Council Book of the Month for January 2018.

Glaw Trana  by Sonia Edwards is the January Book of the Month. Sonia won the Prose Medal at the Anglesey National Eisteddfod in August this year for her volume of short stories, Rhannu Ambarél.  Glaw Trana  is published by Gwasg y Bwthyn from Caernarfon.

"I'm delighted that  Glaw Trana  has been chosen as the January Book of the Month," said Sonia, who lives in the Anglesey town of Llangefni. "It's a lovely feeling to receive such positive recognition from the Welsh Books Council. It's been a very busy and exciting time for me, and that's going to continue as I've started writing a new novel entitled Gavi for Gwasg y Bwthyn. Since I've now retired from my post as a teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, it's wonderful to have the opportunity to concentrate on my writing."

"Glaw Trana  would make an ideal present for St Dwynwen's Day 2018 as love is its subject, together with the dangers of keeping old secrets," said Marred Glynn Jones, Creative Editor with Gwasg y Bwthyn. "This novel is a sequel to Sonia's previous book,  Mynd Adra'n Droednoeth,  and we get the opportunity to follow the fortunes of the next generation, Now and Lois. Will they have to pay the price for the actions of their parents? Glaw Trana is a powerful and engrossing story which stands on its own two feet. You don’t have to have read  Mynd Adra'n Droednoeth  to enjoy this novel. It's certainly a story that touches the heart."

"Sonia Edwards has earned her place as one of Wales' most popular authors, and there will certainly be a warm welcome for her latest novel,  Glaw Trana,"  said Helena O’Sullivan, the Welsh Books Council Head of Sales and Marketing. "This is a novel which is easy to read and grips the reader from the first page."
