Reading Teachers = Reading Pupils

Teacher and two pupils reading books

The Books Council of Wales is delighted to be working with Cheltenham Festivals in delivering the Festivals’ network of teacher book groups with EAS Education Achievement Service in the five local authorities (LAs) in South East Wales (Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen).

Reading Teachers = Reading Pupils is a Cheltenham Festivals programme delivered in partnership with like-minded organisations across the UK including Book Council of Wales, Bradford Literature Festival, Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE), English and Media Centre, Just Imagine, National Literacy Trust, KEAP (The Writers’ Block), Peters, Seven Stories the National Centre for Children’s Books, The Reader, The Story Museum and Wigtown Festival Company.

Set up in 2016, the national network of teachers reading groups aims to inspire reading for pleasure because research shows that children who read for pleasure experience high levels of well-being, engage in learning and are successful in life.

All sessions will be led by members of our expert team at the Books Council and EAS. The group is FREE to attend, and the shared resources are distributed throughout the year along with two copies of each of the 5 titles.

Books Council Wales and EAS will be hosting a primary RTRP programme which is open to all Key Stage 2 teachers. As the selected novels are most appropriate for Year 5/6 pupils, priority is given to teachers of these year groups. To include as many schools as possible, places are limited to two teachers per school. In 2022-23, we will also be running a Key Stage 3 for English teachers/secondary school librarians.

Applications for 2022-23 are open. To appy, click here.
