The Friends of the Welsh Books Council was established in 1995 and since then have gone from strength to strength, holding annual meetings at which some of our foremost writers are guest speakers. The late Jan Morris, the late Emyr Humphreys and the late R. S. Thomas are among those who in the past have discussed their work and the influences on their creative writing at Friends’ events.

The first Chair of the Friends was the late Alun Creunant Davies, former Director of the Books Council who died in 2005.

Honorary Presidents

Mae tri o brif lenorion Cymru wedi bod yn Llywyddion Anrhydeddus i Gyfeillion Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru, sef y diweddar Islwyn Ffowc Elis, y diweddar Emyr Humphreys a’r diweddar Jan Morris.

Gwnaeth y tri gyfraniad arbennig iawn i fyd llenyddiaeth Cymru gan mor amrywiol a gwahanol eu gyrfaoedd a’u cynnyrch. Fel nofelydd arloesol y meddylir am Islwyn Ffowc Elis yn bennaf, a gwyddom hefyd am ei gyfraniad pwysig fel beirniad llenyddol. Daeth Emyr Humphreys i amlygrwydd fel nofelydd ifanc gan ddatblygu hefyd yn fardd a dramodydd teledu. Fel awdur taith y derbyniodd Jan Morris sylw rhyngwladol, ond fe gyhoeddodd hefyd nifer o lyfrau’n ymwneud yn benodol â Chymru.

Fe wnaeth y tri Llywydd Anrhydeddus gofnodi eu diolch a’u gwerthfawrogiad adeg derbyn yr anrhydedd:

Islwyn Ffowc Elis

‘Un o’r storïau mwyaf cyffrous yn hanes ein diwylliant yw datblygiad Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru. Ac yn awr mae gan y Cyngor gorff niferus o Gyfeillion i’w gynnal a’i gefnogi. Braint fawr i unrhyw un yw cael bod yn un o lywyddion y Cyfeillion hyn.’
Islwyn Ffowc Elis

Emyr Humphreys

‘Yn yr oes hon o ddatblygiadau technolegol a chysylltiadau byd-eang mae’r llyfr yn parhau yn gyfrwng hollbwysig. Y mae’n dda gweld felly bod gennym y Cyngor Llyfrau i hybu llyfrau o Gymru.’
Emyr Humphreys

Jan Morris

‘Mae bodolaeth y Cyngor Llyfrau nid yn unig yn bwysig o safbwynt cyhoeddi llyfrau yn y ddwy iaith yng Nghymru, ond y mae’n ddatganiad bod y genedl yn rhoi bri ar un o’r elfennau pwysicaf, y gair ysgrifenedig.’
