We’ve started the countdown to the Tir na n-Og Awards 2022 – celebrating the very best in children’s books in Wales each year. This year’s judges for the Welsh and English awards have read through all the submissions, and we have given them the almost impossible task of whittling down their choices to a shortlist and then finally deciding on the winner in each of the three categories.
The categories are:
- Welsh-language Primary (ages 4–11)
- Welsh-language Secondary (ages 11–18)
- Best English-language book with an authentic Welsh background for primary or secondary age readers (4–18)
The shortlist for each category will be announced on 10 and 11 March.
The awards celebrate the talents of authors and illustrators who either create original works in Welsh, or who write about authentically Welsh themes or backgrounds through the medium of English.
Through the awards, children and young people can enjoy and be inspired by stories and writing from or about Wales. The aim is to celebrate reading for pleasure and to inspire reading choices for young readers.
Our friends at CILIP Cymru Wales sponsor the Tir na n-Og Awards, which have been held by the Books Council of Wales every year since 1976. That’s a lot of brilliant books, and if you can’t wait until March for the shortlist announcement, you can look back on some of the past years’ shortlists for some reading inspiration in the meantime!
